New Diocesan Environment Officer appointed

The Diocese of Canterbury is pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Challender as our new volunteer Diocesan Environment Officer.

Having lived and worked in Canterbury for many years, Sarah is already well connected to the Diocese and its communities. She worships at St Mary's, Chartham, where she has served on the Parochial Church Council and as Eco Church lead. Sarah also has strong connections with her local church St Mary's, Nackington.

The role will support the Diocese's environmental work by helping to inspire, encourage and support others to take action; helping people to understand the urgency of the climate and biodiversity crises.

Speaking about her new role, Sarah said: " For me, success is measured by the positive difference we create together. Whether supporting environmental initiatives, teaching, developing partnerships or promoting wellbeing, my purpose is to inspire hope, empower others and build resilient communities."

Sarah brings a wide range of experience to the position, having worked in engineering, entrepreneurship, higher education and community leadership. She is passionate about helping people and communities respond to environmental challenges and believes the natural world is one of our greatest teachers.

Cat Jamieson, Net Zero Programme Manager, said “We are delighted that Sarah is taking on the role of Diocesan Environmental Officer.  Sarah brings great passion, experience and skills to be able to support and encourage us all to take small but significant steps in cherishing and caring for Creation".

Sarah will work closely with the Diocese's Net Zero team as it continues to support parishes and schools on their journey towards a more sustainable future.

We would also like to thank Joyce Addison, our previous Diocesan Environment Officer, who will be retiring in the coming weeks. We are grateful for her dedication and contribution to the Diocese's environmental work over the years and wish her every blessing in her retirement.
