Department: Net Zero
Hours: Approximately 2-3 days per month
Voluntary role
The focus of the DEO role is to be a figurehead for our environmental work; inspiring, supporting and encouraging others to take action. Supporting people to understand the urgency of the climate and biodiversity crises and that those who have contributed the least are being affected the most. The DEO will inspire people to take positive action through highlighting the theological imperative to Care for Creation and that good environmental stewardship is integral to our mission.
The DEO will work closely with the Net Zero Team who have responsibility to oversee the implementation of the Routemap to Net Zero Carbon and the Silver Eco Diocese action plan and will be part of a national network of DEOs. The DEO will attend the Net Zero Carbon Implementation Steering Group to provide updates and to contribute to the governance of the environmental work in the Diocese.
The Diocese of Canterbury is a bronze awarded Eco Diocese and is committed to the Anglican Communion’s Five Marks of Mission, in particular the fifth mark: to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life on earth.
Our diocese believes that Care for Creation is fundamental to our mission and in November 2019 the Diocesan Synod decided that this should be a key strand of our strategy. We are committed to implementing our agreed Diocesan Environment and Climate Emergency motion (November 2019) and moving towards net zero carbon emissions in line with the resolution of General Synod in February 2020. The work is shaped by the National Routemap to Net Zero Carbon by 2030 and the Silver Eco Diocese Framework.
